In addition to seeing the MelaNation Zine team at the different events that we attend, you can also bring the MelaNation Zine team to you! The MelaNation Zine team facilitates activism, poetry and zine-making workshops for youth in the DMV.
Workshops include age-appropriate introductions to activism and the fight for Black liberation through a Black queer feminist lens; a step-by-step guide on how to make a mini-zine out of one sheet of paper; poetry prompts related to activism and empowerment that the participants will use to write poetry in their zines; and fun craft supplies for the participants to decorate their zines with. Our workshop facilitators have experience working with youth of all ages, and we emphasize creating a creative space for youth to explore their identities and their activism. Workshop lengths range from 60 – 90 minutes.
The MelaNation Zine team’s first workshop series was with Girls Rock! DC in Summer 2017. Since then, we’ve facilitated a zine-making workshop at an Arts x Action event in Fall 2017, and we’ve presented an introduction to the Black Queer Feminist Lens at Spills: A Zinefest, an event hosted by American University’s student-run literary magazine, AmLit. Along with other BYP100 DC activists, we collaborated with the brilliant youth gardeners and scholars at Mighty Greens for a food justice workshop series in Spring 2018.
If you’re interested in having us facilitate a workshop for a youth group you’re involved in, please email the MelaNation Zine team at firstname.lastname@example.org.
