In addition to seeing the MelaNation team at the different events that we attend, you can also bring the MelaNation team to you! The MelaNation team facilitates activism, poetry and zine-making workshops for youth in the DMV.

Workshops include age-appropriate introductions to activism and the fight for Black liberation; a step-by-step guide on how to make a mini-zine out of one sheet of paper; poetry prompts related to activism and empowerment that the participants will use to write poetry in their zines; and fun craft supplies for the participants to decorate their zines with. Our workshop facilitators have experience working with youth of all ages, and we emphasize creating a creative space for youth to explore their identities and their activism. Workshop lengths range from 60 – 90 minutes.

The MelaNation team’s first workshop series was with Girls Rock! DC in Summer 2017. Since then, we’ve facilitated a zine-making workshop at an Arts x Action event in Fall 2017, and we’ve presented an introduction to the Black Queer Feminist Lens at Spills: A Zinefest, an event hosted by American University’s student-run literary magazine, AmLit.

If you’re interested in having the MelaNation team and other BYP100 DC activists facilitating workshops for a youth group you’re involved in, please email the MelaNation team at byp100dczine@gmail.com.
